Why Dr Zawadzki Chose to Add TMS to His Practice

It became quite evident in the early stages of my career that some patients just would not respond adequately to the antidepressants that they had tried. Others would feel a bit better, but would not respond to a degree that they would like. Still others would experience intolerable side effects

This led to some patients suffering from anxiety and depression with few other options that were simply not medication based. Promises of novel antidepressants have been exciting, but slow to come to fruition.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) offered an opportunity for these patients to be treated without the usual burdens of endless medication trials. TMS directed treatment straight at the source – an area of the brain known to be underactive in depression.

In most cases, TMS focuses a beam of magnetic energy at a part of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPLC), forcing it to ‘wake up’ and begin functioning more normally once again. This is what helps the patients feel better. A series of treatments will focus this energy so that the brain re-learns how to activate normally, resulting in less depression and sensation of improved well-being.

Because there are no medications involved in TMS, it is particularly useful for those patients who have only a partial response to medications, or cannot take antidepressant medications for one reason or another.

Other Services

Adult Indications for Use

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Adolescent Indications for Use

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is indicated as an adjunct for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescent patients (15-21).

Important Safety Information

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).
